Our idea of a poker player is usually associated with luck, lucky players, hustlers, card players But what does the poker industry really look like? In this article, co-written with ProBikeSport.com, we will tell some of the most interesting stories from the world of poker, which are forever remembered by fans of this game.

The story of Kriss Moneymaker: from Amateur to Champion

One of the most inspiring stories in the world of poker is Chris Moneymaker’s victory at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2003. Moniemaker, who prior to his victory worked as an accountant and was a casual amateur poker player, won his seat into the tournament through a $39 online satellite. Despite his lack of professional experience, Moneymaker was able to defeat more than 800 opponents, including many well-known pros, to win the $2.5 million top prize. His victory symbolised the so-called ‘poker boom’ and inspired millions of people around the world to start playing poker online.

Legendary Players: Doyle Brunson and Phil Ivey

Poker wouldn’t be as vibrant as it is without its legendary players. Doyle Brunson and Phil Ivey are two titans who have left an indelible mark on poker history.

Doyle Brunson, known as “Texas Dolly,” began his poker career in the 1950s. He won ten WSOP bracelets and authored the famous book “Super/System”, which is still considered one of the best books on poker strategy. Brunson not only achieved outstanding results in tournaments and cash games, but also became a mentor to many young players, sharing his knowledge and experience.

Phil Ivey, on the other hand, is considered one of the best players of all time. He has also won ten WSOP bracelets and has earned numerous high stakes wins in both tournaments and cash games. Ivey is known for his ability to read his opponents and adapt his strategy depending on the situation, making him one of the most dangerous players on any table.

Black Friday: a Dark Chapter in Online Poker History

15 April 2011, known as Black Friday, was a black day for the online poker world. On this day, the US Department of Justice shut down major online poker rooms such as PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker, accusing them of bank fraud and money laundering. This event caused chaos among players who lost access to their funds and their favourite gambling sites. In the years that followed, the online poker industry underwent significant changes, including the introduction of stricter regulation and increased security measures to protect players.

The Psychology of Poker: the Art of the Poker Face

One of the most interesting parts of poker is the psychological struggle at the table. The ability to maintain a “poker face” – a calm, unreadable expression – is the key to success. This skill is masterfully demonstrated by Daniel Negreanu, known for his ability to read hands and the behaviour of his opponents. His success is due not only to his technical skills, but also to his ability to use psychological manipulation to win.

High Stakes: the Story of High Rollers Tom Dwan and Victor Blom

High stakes games are where the real titans of poker collide. Buy-ins in these games can reach hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, attracting professionals and wealthy amateurs alike. One of the most legendary stories is the confrontation between Tom Dwan and Victor Blom, known as “Isildur1”. Their epic online sessions in 2009, in which millions of dollars changed hands in a matter of hours, became a true legend and an example of the incredible highs and lows of poker.

Women in Poker: Breaking Stereotypes

Although poker has long been considered a male-dominated activity, women are increasingly making a name for themselves in the game, shattering outdated stereotypes and paving the way for future generations. Vanessa Selbst, the most successful woman in poker history with over $11 million in tournament winnings, has proven that gender doesn’t matter at the poker table. Her aggressive and analytical style of play has earned her three WSOP bracelets and respect in the poker community. But Selbst is far from the only woman who has contributed to women’s poker. Here’s a look at some of the most prominent women in poker and their achievements.

Liv Borie, a British professional poker player and TV presenter, also deserves a mention. With a degree in physics and astrophysics, Borie has become known for her scientific approach to the game. She has won over $3.5 million in live tournaments, including the European Poker Tour (EPT) San Remo title in 2010, one of the most significant achievements of her career.

Annie Duke is one of the most famous women in the world of poker, with a career spanning several decades. She won her first WSOP bracelet in 2004 and has earned over $4 million in tournaments during her career. Duke is also known for her book Decide to Play Great Poker, which became a bestseller and has helped many players improve their skills.

Christine Bicknell, a Canadian professional poker player, is one of the most promising stars of modern poker. During her career, she has already won three WSOP bracelets and earned over $5 million in tournament earnings.

She is an active supporter of initiatives to promote women in poker and often participates in educational programmes and seminars aimed at bringing more women into the game. Bicknell is a role model for young girls who want to succeed in poker.
